Algorithms

  1. Assignment

    • Assignment algorithms are algorithms that uses variables to hold pieces of data or to define things.
  2. Sequence

    • Sequencing is a type of algorithm that work step by step in a linear fashion. Steps are processed one by one in a single direction. In the algorithm below, the computer follows the steps shown and are followed one by one, one after each other until the end. In this case, 1 is added to N and then it is subtracted again before 2 is added and subtracted by 1 again until the out put is printed
    • Used in the final part of the algorithm where modular algorithms are combined
  3. Selection

    • Selection algorithms are algortihms that are conditional. This means they will run programs if a condition is met. Selection algorithms can make computers do more things. On the right is an example of a selection algorithm. The computer checks if the number is larger than 5. If it is, then 3 is subtracted. If it doesn't, then nothing will happen.
    • Used in the algorithm for checking alot of things such as the user input, if a players health is less than 1, if a player is in the right location etc.
  4. Condition

  5. Iteration

  6. Modularisation

    • Modularisation is a type of algorithm where code is reused (Docherty, 2019). Code is grouped together where they can be executed multiple times. These are called modules or functions and calling them in an algorithm will run the modular algorithm. This reduces errors and saves time when coding as code does not need to be re typed. A modular algorithm is seen below where a spider is to be drawn. Drawing multiple eyes without modularisation will require repeating the eyes code multiple times but using functions can reduce the amount of typing.
    • Used in most of the algorithm such as moving functions, grabbing item functions etc.
  7. Algorithms that repeat over and over again while a condition is true. This can also be used in conjunction with iterative algorithms that change something everytime the algorithm is repeated.
