CONSUMER MEMORY AND LEARNING (H4/Lecture2)

  1. MEMORY

    • 3. LONG-TERM MEMORY
      • Information is stored up by associative networks
      • 2 Karakteristieken
        • a. unlimited capacity
        • b. effecient organization
    • 2. SHORT- TERM MEMORY
      • 7 +/- 2 chunks
      • 2 Karakteristieken
        • a. Limited capacity
        • b. Limited duration
      • Keeping info in STM
        • a. Rote rehearsal
        • b. Quick Coding
    • 1. SENSORY MEMORY
    • RECONSTRUCTIVE MEMORY
      • Je roept niet de precieze feitelijke informatie terug uit je geheugen, maar maakt een reconstructie
        • Reconstructie is beïnvloedbaar, bijv door advertising (Taste of juice - influence of ads)
    • ENCODING
      • Van STM naar LTM
    • REMEMBERING/RETRIEVAL
      • Van LTM naar STM
      • a. Recognition
        • Remembering by an external stimulus
      • b. Recall
        • Remembering without external stimulus (unaided en aided (iemand vraagt je of je 'X' nog kan herinneren)
  2. LEARNING

    • = TRANSFERRING STM TO LTM
    • 1. COGNITIVE LEARNING
      • Engaging in mental (conscious!!) processing
        • a. Repetition (not the same as rehearsal)
          • Repetition = rehearse with more attention
          • Repetition = rehearse at several times at various intervals
        • b. Mnemonics
        • c. Elaboration
        • 2 Types
          • Low involvement
            • Ads should be simple; focus on 1 feature; people don't want to take too much time to learn.
            • Rote Memorization (rehearse the information) is best ad strategy
          • High Involvement
            • Problem solving (give lots of information) is best ad strategy
    • 2. CLASSICAL CONDITIONING
      • Transferring response from stimulus to object (Chanel No. 5 and Nicole Kidman)
        • Cue competition (meerdere stimuli): Als je maar één stimulus als cue gebruikt is de response beperkter.
        • Blocking: bij het toevoegen van 2e stimulus aan de bestaande combinatie zal er geen learning ontstaan voor deze stimulus
    • 3. INSTRUMENTAL CONDITIONING/OPERANT CONDITIONING
      • Trial and error
        • Repeat behavior if it is rewarded
          • Extrinsic reward: not related to the product (rebates, prizes)
          • Intrinsic reward: related to the product
        • Stop behavior if it is punished
    • 4. MODELLING
      • Observeren van other's behavior and rewards/punishments
    • Stimulus generalization (respons op een stimulus kopieren voor een andere, maar vergelijkbare stimulus) vs Stimulus discrimination (we zien de verschillen tussen stimuli, waardoor we ook verschillende responses aanleren)
