Nile River

  1. The Nile River is the longest river in the world.

    • Flowing northward through the eastern Sahara about 4,000 miles, the river empties into the Mediterranean Sea
  2. For a long time, rain far from the south, along the Nile River, caused floods, leaving rich silt, a finely ground fertile soil, good for growing crops.

    • The Nile provided both water and fertile soil for farming. Soon, scattered farms grew into villages and cities. Eventually, an Egyptian civilization developed.
  3. It is the union of the Blue Nile and the White Nile

  4. The Nile's quickly northward flowing waters not only created the agricultural land that made civilization possible but provided an easy router trade between region up and down the river

  5. Countries the Nile River flows through: Egypt, Sudan, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Uganda, Congo, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi.

  6. Egyptians eagerly waited the flooding of the Nile River. For them, the river floods were a life-giving miracle. Without the Nile's regular flooding, people never could of have farmed in Egypt.

    • The river was so important to people that the Greek historian Herodotus called Egypt the gift of the Nile.
  7. The Nile provided farmers with an abundance of food. The river provided many types of fish, and hunters trapped wild geese and ducks along its banks. With this many resources Egyptians had a varied diet.
