              2. Definition of Data
                1. Data consists of raw facts and figures (e.g reading from sensor survey facts, etc
                  1. These raw facts and figures are meaningless because they lack relevance
                    1. If you look at data, it is either no use to you or not in a form you can't use
                    2. Ways in which data can arise
                      1. From the results of experiments
                        1. From automatic measurements using sensors (temperature, rainfall, pressure.)
                          1. From a transaction (buying a download on the internet)
                            1. From a survey
                            2. Encoding data
                              1. Data is often coded when it is collected on input into an ICT. The reasons for this are:
                                1. Coded data is quicker to type in
                                  1. It takes up less storage space on a disk
                                    1. If is easier to do validation checks
                                      1. Faster to access data that is coded
                                        1. It is quicker to send data over a network
                                    2. Information
                                      1. Data processed by the computer
                                        1. Having calculations performed on it
                                          1. Converted to give it meaning
                                            1. Organised in some ways (putting it into numerical order.)
                                          2. Knowledge
                                            1. Obtained from information by applying rules to it.
                                            2. GIGO (Garbage in, Garbage out)
                                              1. If you enter incorrect data into the computer then the output from the computer will also be incorrect
