Lesson 1 - Introduction to networks

2. WAN
  1. Wide Area Network
  2. A network in a large area.
3. Advantages
  1. you can use the same username and password on all the computers.
  2. You can access your files on all the computers.
4. Disadvantages
  1. If one computer in the network gets a virus, all the computers in the network get it as well.
  2. It is very expensive to set up.
Lesson 2 - Network Topologies
1. Star Topology
  1. Advantages
    1. Low chance of failure
    2. No collisions (fast)
  2. Disadvantages
    1. Expensive
    2. Depends on a switch
2. Ring Topology
  1. Advantages
    1. Cheap to install
    2. No collisions
  2. Disadvantages
    1. High chance of catastrophic failure
    2. Difficult to expand
3. Bus Topology
  1. Advantages
    1. Cheap to install
  2. Disadvantages
    1. High chance of catastrophic failure
    2. Lots of collisions
    3. Slows down as more computers are added
Lesson 3-Network Addressing
1. An IP Address
  1. An IP Address is a unique value assigned to every computer in a network and is used to identify it.
  2. Messages on a network have an IP Address attached, which is how a computer knows whether or not keep the message.
  3. The internet is to big for all of the computers to have individual IP Adresses so networks have oall the same.
Lesson 5- The internet
1. The internet is arranged in a mesh topology
  1. You need to find a route.
    1. Routes have "costs"
      1. To transmit the data, the lowest "costing" available route is found.
  2. data is sent through this mesh in packets.
