Research Methods
  1. Experimental Method
    1. Lab Experiment
      1. Controlled and scientific
        1. The effects of cofounding variables are minimised
          1. Strict control allows for replication of the study
            1. Easier to establish cause and effect due to control of extraneous variables
              1. Artificial, lack ecological validity
                1. Demand characteristics may occur, resulting in biased results
                  1. Deception is often used, making informed consent difficult
                  2. Field Experiment
                    1. Less easy to establish cause and effect as it isn't always possible to control all variables
                      1. More ecological validity, they can be generalised to real life
                        1. Demand characteristics can be avoided as participants don't know they're in a study
                          1. Participants often do not know they are in a study and often can't be debriefed.
                          2. Natural Experiment
                            1. It is possible to study variables that it would be unethical to manipulate
                              1. Hard to establish cause and effect as you can't randomly allocate participants so participant variables may cofound results
                                1. Some groups of interest are hard to find
                                  1. Deception is often used and confidentiality may be compromised if the community is identifiable
                                    1. High ecological validity, represents real life
                                      1. Participants may not know they are being studied reducing eliminating demand characteristics
                                      2. QUASI ??
