1.1 Memory and CPU

  1. Memory

    • Volatile
      • this is temporary memory and it requires power to retain its data
    • non-Volatile
      • this is permanent memory and it keeps its contents even when it has no power
    • Random access memory (Ram)
      • you can read and write into ram
      • Ram allows your computer to perform many tasks
      • It is also short term memory
        • where data is stored as the processor needs it
    • Read only memory (Rom)
      • it can only be read not written it
      • rom is non-volatile memory
      • it contains instructions a computer needs
  2. Central Progressing Unit (CPU)

    • Fetches, Decode and Execute
    • Hertz
      • Number of ELECTRICAL CYCLES PER SECOND/ the RATE ELECTRICAL CURRENT CHANGES in the actual circuits
      • Speed is called the clock speed. It is measured in Hertz
    • MULTI-CORE can process more than one instruction at a time
      • Each core has to work on DIFFERENT PROGRAMS OEPERATING IN PARALLEL or it complicates processing
    • Purpose
      • Fetch data and instructions from memory
      • Decode and execute instructions
      • Manage movement of data and instructions to and from peripheral devices
