    1. Purpose
      1. Short term memory
        1. Main place for storing instructions and data whilst a program is being executed.
        2. Part of Fetch, Decode, Execute cycle
          1. RAM is much faster than a HDD or SSD
          2. Volatile
            1. Can be overwritten
            2. ROM
              1. Purpose
                1. Gives computer instructions on how to start up
                  1. Loads operating system into RAM
                    1. Access built in hardware such as the HDD

                      1. Does not lose information when power is turned off

                        1. Cannot be overwritten

                            1. Used to temporarily hold data and instructions that the processor is likely to reuse.
