Revision for Science Checkpoint
Due for 17/03/2022
Fractional Distillation
- Fractional distillation separates a mixture into a number of different parts, called fractions.
- Crude oil is a mixture of Hydrogen and carbon which altogether are called hydrocarbons. The crude oil is evaporated and its vapours condense at different temperatures in the fractionating column. Due to the different vapours having different boiling points
Separating Copper Oxide with Sulfuric Acid
- This experiment shows acid going through a chemical reaction. No Gas is produced however you can see the color change. It starts off as a colorless liquid then changes to a Blue color that resembles mouthwash. After the acid has reacted you can see the remaining Copper Oxide left as Black powder in the beaker.
- 1) Using a measuring cylinder, measure out 25 cm3 of sulfuric acid into the small beaker.
- 2) Collect approximately 2 g of copper(II) oxide on a watch glass.
- 3) Using hot water from a kettle, fill 1/3 of the larger beaker with hot water.
- 4) Warm the sulfuric acid beaker by letting it rest (carefully) in the hot water bath (leave for 2 min).
- 5) Carefully remove the small beaker and add copper(II) oxide to the acid slowly, stir with a glass rod.
- 6) Keep adding the copper(II) oxide, until there is some left over at the bottom of the beaker.
- 7) Let the beaker sit for 2 min to allow the black powder to settle.
- 6) Keep adding the copper(II) oxide, until there is some left over at the bottom of the beaker.
- 5) Carefully remove the small beaker and add copper(II) oxide to the acid slowly, stir with a glass rod.
- 4) Warm the sulfuric acid beaker by letting it rest (carefully) in the hot water bath (leave for 2 min).
- 3) Using hot water from a kettle, fill 1/3 of the larger beaker with hot water.
- 2) Collect approximately 2 g of copper(II) oxide on a watch glass.
Distillation
- For example Salt water can be separated by Heating the water which evaporates the water leaving Salt behind because Salt has a higher boiling point than water. The Water vapour then travels up the round-bottom flask and enters the condenser. The Water vapor condenses without any salt and drips down into a beaker. In conclusion the pure water is in the beaker while the Salt is left in the round-bottom beaker
- Distillation is where a Liquid is separated from a solution.
