Atoms, Elements and Compounds
- each element is made up of one type of element
- atoms are represented by chemical symbols
- In the periodic table they're arranged in groups called columns
- The groups will have elements that usually share similar properties
- Atoms have a tiny nucleus surrounded by electrons
- When elements react, their atoms join with atoms of other elements
- Compounds are formed when 2 or more elements combine together
- When elements react, their atoms join with atoms of other elements
Atomic structure
- The nucleus contains 2 types of particles
- Protons - which have a positive charge
- Neutrons- which have no charge
- Protons - which have a positive charge
- Electrons are tiny negatively charged that more around the nucleus
- An atom has no overall charge. this is because the number of protons is equal to the number of electrons (their charges are equal and opposite proton +1, electron -1)
- The nucleus contains 2 types of particles
