Investigates death and treasure
DEATH
1. Catagories of death
  1. He/she has reason to suspect it's unknown
  2. If the death is violent or unatural
  3. If the person is in custody/state detention
2. Has a right by common law to take possesion of a body
3. Purpose of inquests into death
  1. Who it was
  2. How, when, and where they died
  3. Findings of the particulars of the death
4. Inquest must be held by a jury if the senior coroner has reason to suspect that:
  1. They were in custody and the death was unknown or violent and unatural
  2. Death resulted from act or omission of a police officer or police force of the armed services in their duty
  3. Death was caused by accident, poisoning or disease
  4. 'Sufficient reason'
5. Held in public apart from national security
Protected by absolute privilage
Protected by CoC Act 1981
1. Becomes active when opened
2. Must take care when a jury is involved
Can make S39 orders
1. Can grant anonymity to witnesses under Section 11 of the CoC Act 1981
TREASURE
1. The Crown or a franchisee has has legal right to take something that is deliberatly hidden as treasure
2. Definitions of treasure
  1. Found object, not a single coin, which contains 10% gold or silver and at least 300 years old
  2. Find of 10 or more coins which are at least 300 years old
3. National Museum has a chance to claim it
