      1. Rebellion lead by Lord Deputy's son was crushed by English troops
        1. Henry defeated the most powerful of the Old English families- the House of Kildare
          1. After defeating the rebellion, Henry could decide who would be the new Lord Deputy
            1. Started to govern by direct rule, appoint officals from England to the post
              1. Henry's aims were: to civilise Ireland by spreading English laws & language, to bring the Church of England to Ireland & to prevent Ireland from becoming a base for his enemies
