Atoms

  1. STRUCTURE

    • NUCLEUS
      • Protons
      • Neutrons
      • Positive charge overall because the PROTONS are positively charged and the neutrons have no charge
      • Small compared to the atom as a whole
    • SHELLS
      • Electrons
        • Move around the nucleus
        • Negative charge because electrons have a negative charge
    • Positive and negative attract so that's why the electrons don't just fly away from the nucleus
    • Number of PROTONS = Number of ELECTRONS because they have the same charge just opposite.
  2. PROTONS = 1 relative mass AND +1 relative charge

  3. NEUTRONS = 1 relative mass AND 0 relative charge

  4. ELECTRONS = 1/2000 relative mass AND -1 relative charge

  5. ELECTRON SHELLS

    • 1st shell holds 2 ELECTRONS 2nd shell holds 8 ELECTRONS 3rd shell holds 8 ELECTRONS
    • ELECTRONIC CONFIGURATION
      • Basically a list of how many electrons are in each shell.
        • Nitrogen's = 2,5
        • Argon's = 2,8,8
