Database
A database is where information is stored. This information has to be easy to access, process and retrieve. It also has to be organised.
Examples of databases
- Schools
- The police department
- The Library
- The hospital
- The dentist
Advantages of different types of databases
- Records all stored in one place
- Easily located certain items because its all organised
- Better security so people cannot access confidential information about customers or employees
Disadvantages of different types of databases
- May be more expensive to run rather than other options
- If there is too much information in the database it can get too much and may start crashing if its digital
- Once all the information is set up it will be harder to change
What schools store about us
- I thinks schools store information about us like our medical details.
- They also may store information on our parents if they ever need to get hold of them.
- how well we behave in school
- How good your attendance is
- Our address
- What lessons we like/dislike
- our date of birth and all sorts of information that they need.
- They need to track how your doing in school so they can help you
Categorisation of database
- Paper based
- A library has one because they need to keep track of all the books they have.
- Yellow Pages would have one so they can store all the local landline numbers on there.
- An advantage to paper based databases are that no one would be able to hack into them and they would only be in one place.
- A disadvantage to paper based databases are that you could only get to them when your in the place that there in but if you had them on a computer you might be able to access them in different places. Another one is that you would only be able to get one physical copy of the data.
- Electronic
- The police have a database because of all the criminals they have. e.g. the crimes they've committed
- The dentist would have one because they need to keep the information about the patients e.g. medical forms and whats wrong with your teeth
- An advantage of having an electronic database is that you may be able to access it anywhere you have a computer and you would probably have it backed up so if you loose it you can easily get it back.
- Both
- Schools use a database to store all the information that they need to have about the students.
- The hospital would use one to keep track of their patients and how they're doing
- An advantage of having both is that if you lost the physical copy of the information that you have you can still access a copy from the computer
- Paper based
