Errors

  1. Syntax errors

    • Syntax errors are the easiest to find and fix
    • Your code will not run at all if there is a syntax error
      • An error message will show the exact line containing the error
        • The error message will tell you exactly which line contains the syntax error
    • It happens when your code contains something that is not valid python
    • Code with syntax errors will not run at all
  2. Runtime errors

    • Runtime errors occur when your code is valid python, but is instructing the computer to do something it doesn’t know how to do
    • Unlike syntax errors, code containing runtime errors will run, but will crash if and when the error is encountered
    • Runtime errors are harder to fix because it’s possible to run through a program without ever encountering the error, so it may not be spotted
    • Types of runtime errors
      • Name error
      • Value error
      • Zero division error
      • Type error
  3. Logic errors

    • In a logic error, no programming mistakes have been made, and the program runs to completion without any errors, but the output is not correct.
      • The program “correctly does the wrong thing”
    • A Logic error is the hardest error to fix because there is no crash, so it’s hard to know exactly where the mistake is
      • Often we have to trace through the program to spot where it went wrong
