Working memory model
1. central executive
- Monitors incoming data, makes decisions & allocates slave systems to tasks
- Limited storage capacity
2. Phonological Loop
- Deals with auditory info & preserves he order in which the info arrives
- Phonological store = stores the words you hear
- Articulatory process = which allows maintenance rehearsal (repeating sounds or words in a loop to keep them in the working memory where they are needed)
- Capacity = 2 seconds worth of what you can say
3. Visuo-spatial sketchpad.
- Stores visual/spatial info when required.
- E.g. if you are asked how many windows your house has you will visualise it.
- Limited capacity = 3/4 items.
- Visual cache = stores visual data Inner scribe = records the arrangement of objects in the visual field
- Stores visual/spatial info when required.
4. Episodic buffer
- Added to the model by Baddeley in 2000.
- Temporary store for info - integrating the visual, spatial and verbal information processed by other sources
- Maintaining a sense of time sequencing - basically recording events that are happening.
- Storage component of the central executive. Has a limited capacity of about 4 chunks.
- Links working memory to LYM & wider cognitive processes such as perception
