  1. Extensive support from the Conservatives and the middle classes
    1. Economic gain - provided jobs, prosperity and massive economic opportunities for the upper class
      1. Chamberlain - a popular Conservative politician - strongly favoured imperialism
        1. The Church promoted imperialism and was the centre of people's lives
          1. People went to church because of religion, not support or imperialism
          2. The Monarchy was cherished and Queen Victoria became the 'Empress of India' after persuasion from Disraeli
            1. Khaki election of 1900 saw the Conservatives being reelected
              1. Only polled 400, 000 more than Liberals
                1. Many people voted against Liberals because of Home Rule, not anti-imperialism
                2. Anti Imperialists such as Lloyd George were attacked and meetings broken up
                  1. Incentive not to speak out
                  2. The Boy Scout Movement (which promoted imperialism) had over 100, 000 members in 2 years
                    1. So popular that the Girl Scout Movement followed
                      1. Fun and gave youngsters something to do. Didn't necessarily mean they supported imperialism
                      2. Pro-empire entertainment was popular
                        1. However, there was very little entertainment otherwise
                        2. HAVE TO LOOK AT WHETHER IT WAS AS POPULAR AS MADE OUT IN THE FIRST PLACE
                          1. 1897 - jubilee celebrations represented the peak of imperial enthusiasm in Britain
                            1. 1900 - thousands celebrated the relief of Mafeking
