Physics - P3 - AQA - GCSE - X-rays
High frequency
- Second furthest right on the electromagnetic spectrum
- Furthest right are gamma rays
- Second furthest right on the electromagnetic spectrum
Short wavelength
Electromagnetic waves
Pass through healthy tissue but are absorbed by denser materials (bone, metals, etc.)
- This means X-ray photographs can be taken where the X-rays pass through the body.
- Can be used to diagnose medical conditions
- This means X-ray photographs can be taken where the X-rays pass through the body.
CT Scans
- Multiple two-dimensional scans are taken as shown above from different angles and then put together to make a three-dimensional image.
High doses of X-rays can cause living cells to die.
- Can be used to treat cancers if focused carefully and at the right dosage
Radiographer wear lead aprons/stand behind lead screens/leave the rooms whilst scans occur.
- Exposure time to X-rays is kept to a minimum to reduce damage to healthy cells.
- Lead absorber plates stop X-rays reaching other parts of the body
