Periodic Table

1. Atoms are the building blocks of matter

   • They are made up of protons neutrons, and electrons.
   • Protons are positively charged, located in the nucleus, and attracted to electrons in the electron cloud.
     • Metalloids have properties of metals and non-metals
   • Electrons have a negative charge, are outside the nucleus in the electron cloud, and are attracted to the protons in the nucleus
   • Neutrons have no charge at all and are located in the nucleus.

2. Atomic Number- The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom; there are the same amount of electrons as protons

   • Atomic Mass- The average mass of the atoms in an element; tells the number of protons + nuetrons
     • Element name- Usually from a Greek or Latin word for the element or a substance containing the element
       • Symbol-Short-hand abbreviation for the element name
