needed more leading members from lower social
classes
Stayed in Russia while many were in exile

for Nationalities (due in part to Georgian
origins) with offices close to Lenin's.

During civil war sent to Tsaritsyn to
organise food and defend position
from whites.
Did not like following orders, removed from
military post for disobedience.
Bverdlov died of Spanish influenza in March 1917, Stalin appointed head of
Workers' and Peasants' Inspectorate, familiarty with government departments.
Reputation for industrious mediocrity and was dull in background - described
by diarist Sukhanov as a "grey blur". However, roles undertook which were
seen as dull - important in helping gain influence.
Did not play key role in 1917 though
soon made editor of 'Pravda' and seat
on Executive Committee of the
Petrograd Soviet.
Admired Lenin's writings, soon organising strikes and may
have raided banks to earn money for party under
pseudonym Koba.
