IVF

Annotations:

  • Diffusion: solutes move
  • Osmosis: Water moves
  • Osmolarity
  1. Hypotonic

    Annotations:

    • Not for the hypotensive. Treats depleted ICF
    1. <270 mOsm/L

      Annotations:

      • Will Lower osmolarity of blood. Pulls fluids out of ECF n2 ICF
      1. Any Saline <0.9%. Any Dextrose < 5%
        1. Cell Rehydration
        2. Fluid pulled from ECF into ICF
        3. Extra cellular fluid

          Annotations:

          • Outside the cells. Blood, lymph, bone and connective tissue water. Interstital/ transcellular fluids. (CSF,synovial fluid, pleural fluid
          1. Fluid outside cells
          2. Intracellular Fluid
            1. Fluid within cells
            2. Isotonic

              Annotations:

              • Wont cause a shift in either fluid compartment. Treating Hypotension.
              1. =270-300mOsm/l
                1. NS 0.9%. D5W. LR

                  Annotations:

                  • D5- has calories to decrease catabolism. Once calories are depleted the fluid becomes hypotonic. Could cause Cerebral edema. Caution with Head injurys
                  • LR contains Na+,K+,Ca+, Cl-. Ca+ can cause incompatibilities LR can be helpful in treating metabolic acidosis. Monitor for overtreatment leading to alkolosis
                  1. No fluid shift
                  2. Hypertonic

                    Annotations:

                    • Interstital Edema.
                    1. >300 mOsm/L
                      1. Dextrose Solutions > 5%. Saline solutions >0.9%

                        Annotations:

                        • Monitor for FVE
                        1. Interstitial edema
                        2. Fluid moves from ICF into ECF
                        3. Sterile h2o
                          1. Never used as infusion, only dilution

                            Annotations:

                            • Could cause cells to explode, too hypotonic
