Polymers

  1. Means joining together of small chain molecules to form very large molecules

    • Small molecules are also known as monomers
  2. Polymerisation requires;

    • High temperature
    • High pressure
    • Passed over a catalyst
  3. Thermosoftening

    • Don't have cross links
      • Intermolecular forces are easily overcome as they are weak
      • Free to slide over eachother
    • Easy to shape and melt
  4. Thermosetting

    • Have crosslinks
      • Strong intermoleculr forces which give it its solid structure
    • Doesn't soften when heated
      • Strong' hard and rigid
  5. Uses

    • Plastic bags
      • Light and stretchable low density polymers
    • Tooth fillings
      • Some polymers are waterproof
    • Memory foam
      • Gets softer as it gets warmer
        • Mould to shape
      • Smart material
