This was a way of Hitler controlling the
young in their spare time as well as school
All other youth organisations were banned. By 1939 there were 7 million members.
They learned Nazi songs, went on camps, practiced how to use
weapons, did map reading, marching and physical activities.
Many enjoyed the range of activities, especially going to camp!
At school boys got the full academic curriculum, e.g. Maths, Science, and
range of exams, for when they became the soldiers and workers of the future!

Only taught how to be good Mothers and wives
Subjects included:
Cooking, Sewing, P.E,
Biology and Childcare
Joined Hitler Youth: Age 10 Joined League of Young Maidens: Age 14.
There was a lot of emphasis on marriage and having babies
Girls were taught to have no ambitions of higher education or careers
MOTHERS
HOWEVER, Many young people hated the Hitler
Youth and one in five never joined! They found
the propaganda talks repetitive and boring. Plus
they disliked being told what to do! Many
resented giving up their studies and universities
complained about falling academic standards.
WOMEN
Didn't wear make up
Was blonde, heavy hipped and athletic
Wore fat shoes and full length skirts
Did not smoke
Did not work
Did all the housework
Took no interest in polotics
APPERANCE
Women were encouraged to keep healthy and wear their hair in a bun or plait. They were
discouraged from wearing trousers, taking politics or working because it 'mannified'. Couldn't
wear heels, makeup, or style their hair. Slimming was seen as bad for childbearing.

Nazis were worried about the birth rate.
Loans were given to young couples
Medals were awarded to women with large families
In 1938 they changed divorce laws- only
possible if the couple couldn't have children
Lebensborn programme was set up.
Unmarried women could 'donate a
baby to the fuhrer' by becoming
pregnant by 'racially pure' SS men
