Operating Systems
Multitasking
- Allows several programs to run at the same time
- The CPU is able to switch its attention to each application in turn, fast enough for the user not to notice that they are not running simultaneously
The User Interface
- Provides a means of communication between the user and the OS
- Above the kernel so one operating system kernel can provide a range of user interfaces
Memory Management
- Makes sure the programs and data is stored safely and efficiently
- Makes sure that programs are not able to change the data for another by restricting each programs to its own data
Drivers
- Software used to control a piece of hardware
- Allow a peripheral device to be connected to a computer
Peripheral Management
- Essential for computer system to input, output and store data.
- Communicate with all the computer system by controlling signals produced by device drivers
- Peripheral - Hardware not directly connected to the CPU
File Management
- Locates and saves files in particular places
Kernels
- Deals with low-level hardware operations
Firmware
- Software stored permanently in a device
- Consists of small programs used to control the device
Multi-user and real time system
- Real time - Critical system that require very short and guaranteed response times
- Multi-user - Operating system that is able to run many users simultaneously
