Vietnam tactics
VC tactics
Booby Traps
aim was to injure Us troops so that their comrades would
be traumatised and then demorolised over time
have to tend to them
cost very little to build
very effective
Guerrilla Warfare
hit and run tactics
ambush small groups of US soldiers to put them into panic so they would shoot each other in the crossfire
Tunnel systems
this allowed them to hit a target and disappear back into the jungle undetected
it also allowed them to transport huge amounts of resources as well as soldiers and communication with the north
Assassination campaign
attacking leading members of the Diem government
they were not representatives of the people
were catholic not buddhists
spoke french
Befriended the peasants - winning 'hearts and minds'
through the teachings of Mao
NVA and VC were hugely respectful of the peasants gaining their trust
however if the peasants were discovered helping the Americans they would be executed
TET offencive
this was a full frontal assault on the main cities and military instillations in the south
it was mainly carried out by the NVA as the VC were low on numbers of men by this point
turning point in the war
US tactics
Search and destroy
Missons organised to hunt out and eliminate communist bases in the jungle
these tactics alienated the US soldiers from the people they were meant to be protecting
innocent people were killed they could not tell the difference between the farmers and the VC
My Lai
Zippo raids
this is where the US soldiers,at not finding the VC so used their zippo lighters to burn whole villages
Blanket bombing
Operation Rolling Thunder the code name for the US bombings of strategic targets in North Vietnam
used more bombs than the US had dropped in WWII
Chemical Warfare
Operation Ranch Hand the use of chemical warfare to strip the Vietcong of their jungle cover using defoliants - Agent Orange and Napalm
to see where VC were hiding or expose the networks of tunnels
Helicopters
This also meant the US troops were detached from the people they were supposedly fighting for
Mobility, used to transport troops in to the unfamiliar jungle environment. To carry troops in and out of dangerous areas
