Atoms

  1. An atom is the defining structure of an element that cannot be broken by any chemical means

  2. The smallest particle of a chemical element that can exist.

  3. They are neutral

  4. Are all shown on the periodic table

    • Links to Electronic configuration (see Atomic Structure note)
      • Eg. Flourine - EC of 2,7
        • The fact that there are 2 numbers means has 2 shells so is in group 2
        • The 7 (final number) means it has 7 (x) amount of electrons on the outer shell
    • This is for the first 20 elements - hydrogen-calcium
  5. Isatopes are different atomic forms of the same element, which have the same number of protons but different number of neutrons

  6. Molecules are groups of atoms. Some are made from just one element - H2 - or can be made up of more than one - h20

    • Molecules are held together by covalent bonds
