Abortion and the Law
  1. Abortion- the deliberate termination of a pregnancy usually before the foetus is 24 weeks and viable.
    1. Abortion was made legal in the UK in 1967
      1. Abortion is legal in the UK if two doctors agree that one of the following conditions:
        1. 1. The woman might die unless the pregnancy is terminated.
          1. 2. There is a substantial risk of the baby being born severely physically or mentally disabled.
            1. There is a risk to the woman's physical or mental health.
              1. There is a risk to the physical or mental health of her existing child.
              2. I think time limits were put on having abortions because the longer is waited to have an abortion, the more traumatic or damaging it could be for the mother.
                1. A woman might want an abortion after 24 weeks because financial circumstances might change.
                  1. I think that the law requires two doctors to agree about an abortion because two opinions are more reliable than one.
                    1. The physical or mental health of a woman's existing child/ children may be damaged if she had a new baby because the mother may not have enough time to take care of all of her children.
                      1. As Marina's situation means she won't be able to support the baby in anyway with nowhere to live and no money or food or clothes resulting in the mother not being able not being able to cope, Marina should be allowed to have an abortion.
