  1. ''Education for ignorance and for inferiority in Verwoerd's school is worse than no education at all''
    1. Act No 47 of 1953
      1. It established a Black Education Department in the Department of Native Affairs
        1. The stated aim was to prevent Africans receiving an education
          1. Meant they would be able to get the education that would allow them to have positions in society
            1. Instead they received an education designed to provide them with skills to serve their own people in the Homelands or to work in manual labour jobs under white control
        2. Independent mission schools were forced to implement the new curriculum and policies of the Bantu Education Act or close down
          1. Schools where 90% of black pupils were accomodated
          2. Open Uni's were closed to black people and were replaced by tribal (or ''bush'') universities and ethnic training colleges
            1. Primary Schools stopped teaching black children in English.
              1. Were taught in their mother tongue
                1. Had to learn English later on in life which was an enormous disadvantage
                2. African children students were to be educated in a way that was appropriate for their culture.
                  1. No consultation occurred on this
                    1. All the definitions of culture, appropriate education content and levels, all the decisions about purpose and outcomes of the system were controlled by the apartheid gov.
                    2. It degraded black peoples history, culture and identity - was in their textbooks.
                      1. History and geography provided Bantu Education pupils with localised knowledge whereas, a world view for others
                        1. Gardening was part of the Bantu curriculum and white children were exposed to art and science.
                        2. Black pupils start school at 7, white pupils start school at 5.
                          1. Suffered terribly from the gov's neglect
                            1. Enormous disparities in funding
                              1. Student- teacher ratio affected the quality of education for black people
                              2. Served the interests of white supremacy
                                1. Denied black people the same access to educational opportunities and resources
                                2. The legislation was condemned and rejected as inferior from the time of its introduction
                                  1. At black schools - teachers didn't need to have the same qualifications of white teachers
