GCSE Computing - CPU
Central Processing Unit
- Brain of the computer that performs instructions defined by software
Software
- Set of instructions taht tells the hardware what to do.
- It is what guides the hardware and tells it how to accomplish each task
Fetch ---> Decode ---> Execute
- FETCH - instructions are fetched from the computer's memory
- DECODE - instructions are decoded and prepared
- EXECUTE - instructions are executed
Clock Speed
- It measures the frequency in hertz (Hz) at which the CPU completes an instruction
Cache
- It is a special high speed memory that can be accessed quickly
- Stores frequently used instructions
- Bigger size = Faster accessing
Core
- Mini processor that processes a program's instructions without slowing downt the computer's overall perfomance
ALU
- Arithmetic and Logic Unit
- Performs all arithmetic and logical operations
- Like calculations and comparisons
- Arithmetic and Logic Unit
CU
- Manages programs by directing the flow of data between the CPu and other devices
- A register that can transfer controls and instructions
