  1. Martin Luther
    1. Strongly disputed the claim that freedom from God's punishment for sin could be purchased with money
      1. Wrote a book called 95 Theses in 1517
        1. Argued by some as the catalyst to the reformation across Europe
        2. 1521-was excommunicated by the Pope and condemned him an outlaw
          1. Henry VIII agreed with the Pope until he wanted a divorce from Catherine
          2. Printing Press allowed Luther to spread his views across the world
            1. His marriage also made a new practise of clerical marriage, allowing protestant priests to marry
            2. Henry VIII and Thomas More wrote a book to defend the Catholic Church
              1. Defence of the Seven Sacraments
                1. Pope gave Henry the title of Defender of the faith from the Papcy
                  1. However Henry's fear of diplomatic isolation lead him to consider some Lutheran Ideas
                    1. Henry liked the idea of the King being head of the Church and state
                      1. Key people who advised and worked with Henry, could have had influence over the Lutheran Ideas
                        1. Thomas Cromwell
                          1. Thomas Cranmer
                      2. Anyone who read Luther's book was deemed Heretic and burned
                        1. Cambridge was a hotbed of radicalism (wanting change)
                          1. If you came out and said you were a Lutheran, you would have to flee the country
                            1. Tynedale translated the Bible into English
                              1. Three Main Ideas
                                1. Justification be faith alone
                                  1. You can only be forgiven through faith alone not actions on earth
                                  2. Priesthood of all believers
                                    1. People should forge a more personal relationship with God, Priests were not superior to anyone else. Everyone could act as his or her own priest

                                      1. All doctrine should be found in scripture alone, otherwise it is not justified
