Categorical Predictors

  1. DV: Continuous (e.g., symptoms)

  2. IV: Continuous (e.g., stress) or Dischotomous (e.g., gender)

  3. Polytomous Predictors

    • Nominal scale of measurement with categories (i.e., discrete) which bear no quantitative relationship with one another
      • In other words, it is not scalable
      • Has more than 2 categories (if 2 then dichotomous
    • To use a polytomous variable, we have to dichotomise it by:
      • Collapsing the categories into 2
      • Dummy Variables: Creating several dichotomous variables to represent the polytomous variable
  4. Dichotomous variables can be used in regression
