  1. Asclepions
    1. Asclepios was the Greek god of medicine.
      1. If people were ill, this is where they'd go, it was a temple for Asclepios.
        1. They'd have to bring an offering- could be jewels, food or anything in between.
        2. During the day they'd get relaxed, washed and fed by priests.
          1. They'd then sleep in the abaton, with the expectation that they'd be healed by Asclepios, his healing snake and two daughters.
            1. The snake would lick the affected area and they'd be cured.
              1. However it's more likely that they were given natural sedatives while the priest did some actual healing.
          2. Key Individuals
            1. Hippocrates
              1. Believed very strongly in Clinical Observation.
                1. Believed in common sense causes and treatments of disease.
                  1. Diagnosis, Prognosis, Observation, Treatment.
                  2. Imbalance of these four bodily fluids was what he though caused disease.
                    1. Therefore, treatments were based on this.
                      1. Blood-letting
                        1. Purgatives
                          1. Laxatives
                        2. A lot of work attributed to him is probably the work of his followers.
                          1. Hippocratic Corpus
                            1. Oath
                          2. Aristotle
                            1. Developed the idea of "The Four Basic Qualities": Hot, Cold, Wet and Dry".
                              1. This then led on to the theories of the Four Elements, the Four Temperaments and, most relevantly, the Four Humours.
                          3. Dissection allowed in Alexandria.
                            1. For a while, even live dissection happened on criminals.
                              1. Herophilus was an anatomist who worked on blood vessels. He identified the difference between arteries, veins and nerves.
                              2. Lack of anaesthetics and antibiotics, along with poor hygiene hindered surgical progress.
                                1. Most people just died.
                                  1. They did setting of fractures and relocating bones.
                                  2. Had a good lifestyle, including a good diet, exercise and sleep.
                                    1. Being healthy was very important, it would have been embarrassing not to be.
