Chemistry Topic 1
Atoms and their structure
- Made up of neutrons, protons and electrons.
- Atomic number is the number of protons and electrons.
- Proton=+1, Neutrons=0, Electrons=-1
Isotopes
- Isotopes are the atoms of an element with different numbers of neutrons. They have the same proton number, but different mass numbers.
Chemical equations, subscripts and superscripts
- The subscript is the number after and below the element letter to show how many of each element there is
- The superscript is shown where the atomic mass is next to an element in the periodic table.
Mixtures and how to separate them
- Chromatography
- Ink or plant dyes
- Filtration
- Insoluble from a liquid
- Evaporation
- Soluble from a liquid.
- Simple distillation
- Liquid from a solution
- Fractional distillation
- For two or more liquids
- Chromatography
Models of the atom
- Plum pudding
- Nuclear model
Periodic table and how it's arranged.
