      2. IMMIGRATION CAUSE OF MULTICULTURAL SOCIETY

          1. british empire existed from 17th century -20th. during time there was some immigration from british overseas colonies to uk
            1. 1940-60's large immigration.
              1. ww2 labour shortages, gov encouraged immigration
                1. new law allowed ppl from former british countris to live & work in uk without visa,
                  1. result, 60,000 indians & pakistanis moved to uk by 60's
                  2. since 1960's other waves of immigration
                    1. 1972 ugandan dictator expelled 80,000 african asians from country, uganda been part of british empire so many held british passports. 28,000 came to UK
                      1. 1970' & 90's ethiopians and somalians came to uk fleeing civil war in east africa
                        1. 2004 - increase from eastern europe after new countries joined european union, eu citizens can live & work in any eu country
                        2. most move to urban areas - demand for workers.
                          1. few settle in rural areas - aren't as many jobs.
                            1. mmigrant workers found employment and accommodation then helped others from fam or community join them in UK
                              1. often move to same areas, set up communities of ethnic minorities 'chain migration'
                              2. some spread out more
                                1. many still concentrated in urban areas
                                  1. some ethnic minority population spread out across UK
                                    1. mainly cause children of immigrants move away from place of birth
                                      1. decline of tranitional industries late 20th century led to high unemployment in many old industrial towns
                                        1. children and grandchildren lived in UK whole lives - comfortable moving away
                                          1. many gone to unis away from place of birth, settled there where there are more graduate jobs
