Leauge of Nations was to help keep the peace. In the 1920s it had some succeses however by 1937 the leauge became irrelevant and ignored by Britain and France.

POST WAR CRISIS: 1919:  28TH JUNE 1919, THE TOV WAS SET UP BY WILSON, LLYOD GEORGE AND CLEMENCEUA. 1920: LON WAS SET UP TO SORT OUT DISPUTES BETWEEN NATIONS FAIRLY. 1923:CRISIS IN GERMANY AS THE FRENCH INVADE THE RUHR AND THEN GERMAN WORKERS GO ON STRIKE CAUSING INFLATION AND MONEY BECAME WORTHLESS.

IMPROVING INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS: 1925: THE LOCARNO TREATIES- GERMANY ACCPET THE TOV. 1926: GERMANY JOINS LON 1928: KELLOG BRIAND PACT- MOST COUNTRIES AGREE NOT TO GO TO WAR TO SETTLE INTERNATIONAL DISPUTES. 1929- WALL ST CRASH- WOLDWIDE ECONOMICAL DEPRESSION.

WORLDWIDE ECONOMIC DEPRESSION: 1931-1933: MANCHURIAN CRISIS- JAPAN BEGINS BUILDING PACIFIC EMPIRE. 1933- JAPAN LEAVES THE LEAUGE.... HITLER BECOMES LEADER OF GERMANY..GERMANY LEAVE THE LEAUGE. 1933-1935: GERMANY RE ARMS. 1925-1936- THE ABYSSININAN CRISIS- ITALY INVADES ABYSININA.  1936: GERMAN TROOPS ENTER RHINELAND. 1937- ITALY LEAVES LEAUGE. 1938-CHAMBERLAINS POLICY OF APPEASEMENT CULMINATES IN THE MUNICH AGREEMENT.  1939- HITLER INVADES POLAND... SECOND WORLD WAR.

in the USA the idea of the leauge wasnt popular: The USA  didnt want anything to do with the leauge because: they wanted america to stay our the disputes. the leauge was linked to the TOV. some were worried abou the economic cost of joining the leauge. Others opposed the leauge because they were anti british or anti french.

America became isolationist therfore, they didnt join the leauge.

aims: discourage agression from any nation. encourage countries to co-operate in buisness and trade. encourage nations to disarm. to improve the living and working conditions of people in all parts of the world.

membership of the leauge: Britain and France= most powerful countries in the leauge. Italy and Japan were pernament members of the council.  however britain and france were poorly placed because they had been weakended by the first war.  they felt America would be the only country to make the leauge work.  Britan and france had different priorites. Britain wer more interested in rebuilding british trade and looking after britains empire. whereas France were still concerned over Germany because he felt the leauge was too weak to protect France from Germany.  He didnt think Britain was  likely to send army to help so this is why France were prepared to bypass the leauge if necessary to strengthen its postion against Germany.

Council: small group, met 5x a year and in case of an emergeny it included: Permanment members. in 1920 these were; britain, france, italy and japan. Temporary members: elected by the assembly for three year periods. each pernament member had a VETO which ment one pernament member could stop the council acting even if all the members agreed. The idea o the council was to discuss matters before they got out of hand. If this didnt work, the council could do: Moral condemnation: decide which country was the aggressor.  members of the leauge could refuse to trade with aggressor. the armed forces of member countries could be used against the aggressor.

Assembly: leauges parliament. The assembly could recommend action to the council and vote on: Admitting new members appointed temporary members. budget of the leauge. other ideas put forward by the council. only met once a year. Decisons had to be unaminous.

pernament court of international injustice: key role in settling disputes. would give a decision on a border dispute between countries. it had no way of maing sure that countries followed its rulings.

international labour organsisation:brought together employers, governments, and workers representatives once a year.  improve conditions for people.

Sekretat: civil service. kept records of meetings and prepared reports.

the leauge of nations commision: Mandates: made sure britain and france acted in the interests of the people of that territory not in its own interests. refugee committee- helped return refugees to their orginal homes ater the war ended. slavery comminsion: Stop slavery around the world. health committe:deal with dangerous diseases and educate people about health and sanitation.

Vilna 1920- Poland and Lithuanaina.  Made the leauge look weak. Lithuanaian appealed for help, poland the agressor.. Leauge failed to do anything about poland as they saw them as threat because they saw it as a [ossible ally against Germany so they didnt want to cause any problems thererore, Britain werent prepared to send troops and act alone. (NEGATIVE)

Upper Silesia 1921:Silesia on the border between germany and poland. Both wanted control over it as it had a good iron and steel industry. A PLEBESISTE  was ordered for silesia to decide which contry they wish to join. French and Britsh troops were sent to keep order.  Industrial areas voted Germany, rural areas voted Poland. Both countries agreed. (POSTIVIE)

aaland islands 1921:Sweden and finland wanted thr aaland. threatning to fight. They appealed to the leauge.  Leauge said islands could go to finland. Sweden accepted, war was avoided (POSITIVE!!!!)

Corfu 1923:border to be sorted out was the border between Greece and Alabania. Ambassador appointed an italian general called tellini to supervise it and on the 27th August, Tellini and his team were ambushed and killed. Mussolini was furious and demanded greece to pay compensation and execute the murderers.  On the 31st August, mussolini bomabrded corfu and 15 people were killed. Greece appealed to the leauge.Leauge suggested Greece pay compesation but the money had to be held by the leauge. the money would be given to italy once it was paid off and the murderers were found. mussolini accepted.  however persuaded the ambassadors to change leuages rulings.  The greek had to apologise andpay they compensation to italy. (NEGATIVE!!)
