Remembering the 1913 Lockout- its lessons. (Michael D Higgins) One of the most significant events in the foundation of the Irish state. Remembered from "Strumpet City". The greatest confrontation between workers and employers. August 26th- tram drivers took out their union badges, starting the strike. They wanted equality of hours with the tramway workers of Belfast. Dispute lasted from August 26th 1913 to January 14th 1914. Most severe industrial dispute in Irish history. William Martin Murphy was 30 years older than Jim Larkin, but most successful Irish businessman of the period.
