Atomic number: the number of protons in the nucleus. The number of protons in the nucleus of a neutral atom is always equal to the number of electrons around the nucleus.

Mass number: protons+neutrons. Find number of neutrons by subtracting atomic number from the mass number.

Number of neutrons=mass number-atomic number

When an atom is neutral, there is an equal amount of protons and electrons in an atom, and the charges cancel each other out. When at atom is neutral, its overall charge is 0.
