Pavarana Day

A+Diary+For+A+Nun+Atttending+A+Pavarana+Day (application/pdf)

Pavarana Day is part of Vassa (Rains Retreat). On this day monks and nuns get together and air publicly any problems they have had with each other over the last 3 months. It may be about religious practice and personality.

On this day the whole community gathers together and hears what people have to say. Sometimes this is referred to as the 'Telling Off' Day.

The Most important thing is that the person who making the comment must do so with love and compassion, and the person who it is about must accept it as it was made to help the person, not hurt them. Individuals always have the opportunity to respond if they think the criticism is unfair.

What is Vassa?

The Monks and Nuns stay in a monastery. They do this in the rainy season, so it is called rains retreat They reflect and meditate on the teachings of the Buddha. They stay for three months. They try and achieve enlightenment.

Takes place between either July moon to October moon OR December moon to February/March moon. It is also depends on Geographical Location.

After the body is cremated they search for pearl relics, signs in the ash and Wind Direction. Where does the smoke go.

The Ash and Map are sent to be evaluated

The evaluating monk made an astrological chart. They search for a certain valley, look for a certain sound and the father with the beginning letter. Close disciple has dreams and finds the reincarnation.

The boy has to identify 3 items; rosary, a bell and hand drum

The Dalai Lama confirms the boy is the correct reincarnation. The Dalai Lama is the leader of the Buddhists he is Tenzin Gyatso. The reincarnation might be in China or a girl.

How the Catholic Pope is Chosen

120 cardinals participate in the selection (Pope John Paul II)

No pope over 80 may be selected

2/3 plus one majority needed for new pope

If 4 days of voting does not receive a 67% majority vote, the candidate with majority wins

Prior to election

When the old pope passes away the Camerlengo (his chamberlain), announces the death

Camerlengo holds papal office till new Pope elected

Nine days of mourning held

After the mourning, the process for voting is organised and convened by Camerlengo

College of Cardinals convene in Rome

Election can't take place until 15 days after Pope's death and no more than 20 days

Any Catholic male could be a Pope, but normally limited to priests who are cardinals. Did happen in past and were immediately ordained as bishops

Election

Conclave - with key - voting is secret

Cardinals locked in room in Sistine Chapel

Voting is by secret ballot

No contact with outside world

Ballots burned and if vote is successful there is white smoke above Vatican

No Pope , chemical added and grey smoke

Many Catholics wait in St. Peters Square

Some feel symbolic rebirth of church and end of grief for old Pope

Pope comes onto Balcony

After Election, New Pope accepts office and dozens of formal ceremonies occur, some quite private and others very public.
