Structure of the Atom

At the center of the atom is the nucleus, where the protons and neutrons are

The protons and neutrons are packed tightly together

The electrons circle the nucleus in shells

As these shells move further away from the nucleus they have higher energy levels

The first shell, n=1 can hold only 2 electrons

However, every other shell can hold up to 8 electrons
