Solutions
- Some substances dissolve in liquid to form a SOLUTION.
- In solution, dissolved substances break up so light can pass through. This is why solutions are transparent.
- Solution either coloured or colourless depending on substances in it.
-Liquid in solution called SOLVENT.
- Substance dissolved called SOLUTE.
- Water dissolves many solids, some gasses and some liquids.
- Substance that dissolves in solvent is SOLUBLE.
- Substances that don't dissolve are INSOLUBLE.
- When solution formed, there is CONSERVATION OF MASS. MASS of SOLUTION = MASS of DISSOLVED SUBSTANCE + MASS OF LIQUID AT START.
- Limit to how much solute you can dissolve into particular volume of solvent. All extra solute will sink. SATURATED.
- Solubility depends on solvent, temperature and solute.
