Ancient Greeks -around the year 450 bc

The Hippocrates identified the four different humours- blood, phlegm, yellow bile (sick) and black bile (blood in vomit).

They believed that everybody has their own individual mix of these 4 humours, and if the mix was unbalanced then you became ill. Eg- if you had a temperature and your skin was red and hot it was because you had too much blood.

They also believed these humours were linked to the four seasons and the ideas of the four elements, air, fire, water and earth.

Treating illness -In Ancient Greek times they treated illness by bloodletting(letting out excess blood). Although most Greek Doctors just suggested rest, changes in diet, and leaving the body to heal itself for cures to illness.
