REDUCERE-USERECYCLERECOVERYLANDFILL
Why is waste such an issue in terms of sustainability?high costs of landfill taxwind blown litterground water pollutiondepletion of natural resourceswaste of energy used for moving productsspace requirements for landfill
Transport in urban areas
Why has urban traffic increased so much? More cars per family high income means more car ownership spread of houses to suburbs and towns increases commutes large urban working population rising population people are willing to make longer journeys for leisure purposes
What impacts has an increase in urban traffic had? congestion costs the UK £15 billion a year - lost work hours, late delivery's etc cost of road repairs, building and maintenance Environmental- pollution, loss of habitat, more petrol burned, noise pollution, loss of land to carparks roads etc Social- stress/anger, healthy problems, accidents, wasted time
What can be done to make urban transport more sustainable? restricted cars - mexico city off road for one day congestion charge to discourage petrol tax increase parking tax hybrid engines improve public transport catalytic converters to improve car engines biofuels- brazil
