poverty can be defined by a household income which is less than 60% of the UK average income
Child poverty is an issue which has to be addressed at this point in time because for children, the poverty trap that their families find themselves in can have a huge influence on their progression throughout life and this in turn creates the cycle of poverty.
Poverty has a devastating impact on children growing up. It affects their whole life, from health and well-being to their educational attainment and aspirations. The circumstances that cause poverty are on a varying scale.
The U.K. government stresses that ‘work is the best route out of poverty’, but without any action to tackle low pay, improve job quality and help parents progress in work, it is difficult to make progress on tackling child poverty.
Financial stability is crucial, but it is often hard to achieve when people are living in poverty. Lone parents find that working in low-paid jobs find they are simply worse of than living on benefits. Thus meaning there is a bigger chance of poverty occurring.
Low-paid and part-time working is a serious concern as families are still falling below the poverty line even though there is a family member at work.
