- 1What is a sample? What is a sampling frame?A sample is a subgroup of the population that is selected for the study
A sample frame is a list of memebers that is selected for the study - 2What is a representative sample? remember generalisation and peer reviewIt is a sample which mirrors the population
- 3What is the process of the sampling technique, Random Sample?A random sample is a sample where each member of the population has the same chance of being selected
- 4Is the Random Sample representative of the population? No because it does not mirror the population because it is utterly random chances of being picked
- 5What is systematic Sampling? This is when every nth person is chosen from the sampling frame
- 6What is a stratified sample?A stratified sample is a sample that represents the rest of the population
- 7What is a Quota sample?A Quota sample is a sample that selects a certain number of a certain group from the sample frame. For example, they might choose to have a certain amount of a social class, age, gender or ethnicity S.A.G.E
- 8What is a snowball sample?A snowball sample is a sample in which a person passes the questionnaire onto the next person and the next person passes onto the next.
- 9What is a cross sectional study?A cross sectional study is a study that takes a sample from the populations and questions them once on relevant ussues
- 10What is one advantage and once disadvantage of cross sectionAdvantage- Not as time consuming and can be a cheap way of gathering a lot of information
Disadvantage- It only gives a snapshot view and only tells us a view at one particular point in time. - 11What are the advantages and disadvantages of Longitudinal studiesAdvantages- Allows us to access social changes over a period of time.
Disadvantage- it can be time consuming and expensive. - 12What is a self completion/ postal questionaires? These are questionnaires that are sent out in the post or by email and then returned to the sender.
- 13What are the advantages and disadvantages of Self completion/ postal questionnaires?advantages- cheapest and quickest. They are standardised and therefore they can be compared. There will be no observer effect as the researcher is not present.
Disadvantages- might be misunderstood because a researcher isn't present to explain the question. The response rate is usually low so it cannot generalise to the rest of the population - 14What are structured interviews?Structured interviews are a set of standardised instructions that are stuck to by the researcher.
- 15What are the advantages and disadvantages of structured interviews?Advantages- standardised- can be compared and can be replicated to check the reliability
Disadvantages- The interviewees don't have the opportunity to raise all the issues they might want to. Interviewer effect - 16What are unstructured interviews? An interview without a set of pre-set questions.
- 17What are the advantages and disadvantages of unstructured interviews?Advantages- can rephrase questions in order for the participant to understand the question and can explore issues with follow up questions
Disadvantages- more time consuming and expensive. The information can not be directly compared and the interviewer effect is possible. - 18What are group interviews? An interview in which there are a group involved in the answers
- 19What are the disadvantages and advantages of group interviews?advantaged- can gather a wide range of views and might make the interviewers much more comfortable
Disadvantages- some of the interviewees might dominate the interview which wouldn't give a generalised view. The interviewer cannot guarantee the interviewees confidentiality which goes against the ethical guidelines of confidentiality and anonyminty - 20What is non- participant observation?Non participant observation is when the participant observes the activities without taking part.
- 21advantages and disadvantages of Non- Participant observation.advantages- reduces the observer effect but only works if it is covert and it is easy to record
Disadvantages- if It is overt then is has a higher risk of the observer effect - 22What is covert and overt Participant observation?Covert is when the interviewer does not tell the interviewees that they are being researched where overt is when they tell the group they are being studied.
- 23What are the advantages and disadvantages of covert Participant observation?advantages- removes the observer effect and is suitable for difficult to reach groups- eg ones that are involved in criminal activity.
Disadvantages- expensive and time consuming with it being hard to check the reliability and the researcher might need to become involved in criminal activity - 24What are the advantages and disadvantages of overt PO?advantages- avoids ethical issues unlike covert. It is also conducted in a natural setting which increases it`s validity.
Disadvantages- observer effect possible and difficult repeat to check a reliability and harder to see the world through the groups eyes. - 25What are the advantages and disadvantages of Official stats?cheap, easy to access, sometimes shows data that is hard to access from other forms, they can be used a primary research to get a fuller picture
Disadvantages- sociologists have little say on the terminology and they cannot check the validity, they are also socially constructed.
