- 1What is the Scientific Method?Is an ordered and logical approach to a problem involving a series of steps

7. Communication - 3What is a hypothesis?A suggested explanation or educated guess to explain an observed event or information
- 4What is data?The information gathered through observation, experimentation or measurement
- 5Where are results published?In scientific journals and the internet
- 6What is a theory?This is a hypothesis that has been strongly tested and supported and has not yet been found to be false (e.g. Big Bang Theory)
- 7What is a principle/law?This arises from a theory that is seen to be always true under all conditions under a long period of time (e.g. law of gravity)
- 8How does design make a good experiment?Experiments require variables but only one can be tested/changed at a time
- 9What are variables?Are factors that can be changed measured or controlled in an investigation
- 10What is an independent variable?it is changed during the experiment
- 11What is a dependent variable?It is measured during the experiment
- 12What is a controlled variables?These are kept the same during the experiment
- 13What safety precautions should be taken in any experiment?->Wear gloves
->wear goggles
->be careful with glass beaker
->wear a lab coat
->don't eat or drink in the lab - 14What is a control?Is an experiment which is identical to the main experiment, but it lacks the factor under investigation
- 15What is the function of a control?Used as a comparison in experimentation
- 16How can a test be made fair?->large sample size
->random selection
->replication of experiment
->Double Blind testing - 17What is Double blind testing?It is when neither the experimenter, nor the participant of the test drug should know who gets either the test drug or placebo
- 18What is a placebo?A medically ineffective treatment for a disease which is used as a control in drug trials
- 19What are the limitations of the scientific method?1. The extent of our knowledge
2.Experiments conducted based on time and money available
3. Interpretation of results may be incorrect
4. Changes in the world
5. Accidental discoveries e.g. Penicillin
6. Ethics-using of animal testing and medical issues
