  1. 1What is Modelling?A model is a program which has been developed to copy the way a system works in real life.
It uses mathematical formulas and calculations to predict what is likely to happen based on data recorded about what actually happens in the past.
  2. 2What are the features of spreadsheet modelling?- Use of formulas
    - Use of functions
    - Supports goal seek
    - Provides a range of graphs
    - Dynamic calculations
  3. 3What are some of the Characteristics of Spreadsheet applications?- can sort data
    - absolute and relative cell referencing
    - can protect certain cells
    - user interface forms
    - macro language support
    - lookup tables
    - searching and filtering
    - graphing
    - replication
  4. 4What are the advantages of financial modelling?- 'What Ifs' can be asked.
    - They provide quick answers and results
    - Try and minimise financial risk
  5. 5Disadvantages of Financial Modelling?- Can be time consuming to produce effective models
    - Some situations may be expensive due to bespoke software
  6. 6What can object modelling be used for?- Disease modelling
    - Weather modelling
    - Earthquake modelling
    - Bridge modelling
    - Roller Coaster design
    - Car design
    - Car Crash testing
    - Game simulation
  7. 7Advantages of using models?- Expensive prototypes don't need to be built
    - No equipment is damaged
    - People aren't put in any danger
    - Modifications can be made easily and re-tested quickly
    - Time can be sped up / slowed down
  8. 8Disadvantages of using models.- Results depend entirely on how good the model is
    - Simulations cant completely recreate real life situations
    - The equipment and software may to expensive to purchase
    - Staff need to be trained how to use the software
    - Developing a complex model takes many years of effort and so are expensive to produce.
  9. 9What is a Variable?A variable holds values which can be changed.
  10. 10How can variables be used in models?Different variables can be used/ changed to create different situations and to see the result of them.
  11. 11Pros of using a named variable?- Makes formulas easier to understand
    - A named variable can also reference a cell in another worksheet without the formula looking any different
    - Simple to move a variable to another location without any formulas being changed.
  12. 12Cons of using named variables?- Have to be careful not to use the same name in different worksheets as this can be confusing
    - Should pick sensible names
  13. 13What is a rule?A rule is a set of procedures that must be followed in order to get the right answer. It can also be the sequence of events required for the calculation to work.
  14. 14Why are rules used in spreadsheets? When someone need to do something specific, they follow a set of rules.
  15. 15What is Formulae?A formula performs calculations using numbers, cell references and mathematical operators.
  16. 16What is a Function?A function is a standard routine used to perform common tasks. It represents a complex formula that uses reserved words e.g. SUM
  17. 17Difference between Formulae and Functions.- A formula is typed directly into the formula bar WHEREAS a function is built into the software
    - You cant nest formulas BUT you can nest functions
    - Formulas are simple calculations AND functions are used to simplify complicated maths
    - Formulas do not have built in wizards BUT functions often have built in wizards to help you complete them
  18. 18What is a work sheet?A worksheet is a single page of rows and columns in a workbook.
  19. 19What is a Workbook?A Workbook is a collection of worksheets which are stored together.
  20. 20What is a Row?A Row is the range of cells that go across the spreadsheet horizontally.
  21. 21What is a Column?A Column is a range of cells that go down the spreadsheet vertically.
    They are identified by letters.
  22. 22What is a Cell?A Cell is an individual box within a worksheet that can be identified by a unique cell reference. It can hold text, numbers or formulae.
  23. 23What is a Range?A range is a group of selected cells which can be next to one another or non-adjacent.
References are identified by cell references or a name.
  24. 24What is relative cell referencing? When a formula is copied or replicated to another cell, relative cell referencing alters any cell reference it contains, relative to the position of the original formula and the location.
  25. 25What is Absolute cell referencing? When a formula is replicated to other cells, any part of the formula which contains an absolute cell reference will remain static or the same when the formula is copied.
This is when the cell is locked with a $.
