Photosynthesis

Flashcards do conjunto (17)
- 1what is photosynthesis?it is a process that makes glucose from carbon dioxide and water
- 2word equationcarbon dioxide + water = sugars(glucose) + oxygen
requires: sunlight and chlorophyll - 3symbol equation (balanced)(6)CO2+(6)H20 = (6)C6H12O6+O2
requires: sunlight and chlorophyll - 4internal structure of a leaf

- 5what factors increase or slow down the rate of photosynthesis1. light intensity
2. temperature
3. carbon dioxide concentration - 6in excess: light intensityas light intensity increases the rate of photosynthesis also increases, however after a certain point the light intensity no longer effects the rate of photosynthesis because of the CO2 concentration or temperature becoming the limiting factor
- 7in excess: CO2 concentrationas the CO2 concentration increases the rate of photosynthesis also increases, however after a certain point the CO2 concentration no longer effects the rate of photosynthesis because of the light intensity or temperature becoming the limiting factor
- 8in excess: temperatureas temperature increases the rate of photosynthesis increases, however after a certain point the temperature increases too high the enzymes in the plant cab break down and denature
- 9what is glucose used for in plants?-respiration
-making cellulose
-making amino acids - 10glucose use: respirationuse the energy to convert the rest of the glucose into various other useful substances
- 11glucose use: making celluloseglucose converted into cellulose for making strong cell wall, supports and strengths the cell
- 12glucose use: making amino acidsglucose is combined with nitrate ions to make amino acids. when amino acids are joined together in a particular sequences they make up a particular protein.
- 13storgae of glucose: lipidsplants can convert some of the glucose they produce into lipids (fats/oils), plants store lipids in seeds
- 14storage of lipids: startchplants can convert glucose into startch ready for use when photosynthesis isn't happening as much, it is stored in the roots, stems, seeds and leaves. Insoluble so better for storing
- 15calculationg the rate of photosynthesis=total length of bubble/time taken to produce (cm/min)
- 16inverse square law: light intensity (directly proportional) 1/d^2example: if you have half the distance the light intensity will be four times greater
- 17greenhousesthey can artifically create the perfect environment to maximise the rate of photosynthesis.
trap sun's heat and make sure the temp isnt limited. supply artificial light. they use paraffin heaters and as it burns it makes CO2. they keep plants healthy and away from diseases and pests. add fertilisers
