Flashcards do conjunto (34)
- 1What is the CPU?Central Processing Unit- it is the brain of the computer, the computer would not work without
- 2What are the 2 main parts of the CPU?The Control Unit
The Arithmetic and Logic Unit (ALU) - 3What does the control unit do?looks at Data- HD, RAM
- 4What does the Arithmetic and Logic Unit (ALU) do?Maths and Calculations
- 5What does the CPU work on?The Fetch-decode-execute cycle
- 6What is the fetch-decode-execute cycle?

- 7What does the fetch do?Fetch data
- 8What doe the decode do?Works out what data means
- 9What does the execute do?Perform task
- 10What happens when a computer is switched on?Switches on -->
ROM (Read only memory) -->
Boot up -->
CPU -->
OS --> - 11What is the clock-speed?Measures the speed of the fetch-execute system, measured in Hertz. e.g 4GHz= 4 billion complete cycles every second
- 12What is Cache memory cycle?Cpu (requests data) -->
Cache memory
Main Memory (Next packet of data copied to cache ready) -->
Cache memory (data sent to CPU) -->
CPU
If the data is not there in the Cache memory the CPU requests it from the Main memory - 13What is Level 1 Cache Memory?On CPU chip
Low capacity
Same speed as the CPU - 14What is Level 2 Cache Memory?A little further away from CPU
Larger than CPU
Slower than CPU - 15What is Level 3 Cache Memory?Largest
Furthest away
Slowest - 16What are Buses?Connection between different parts of the motherboard send data around system.
- 17What is the difference between a normal core and a dual core?It is x2 the speed because it has two processors that allow simultaneous processing of the fetch-execute cycle.
- 18What is the difference between a normal core and a quad core?It is x4 the speed because it has four processors that allow simultaneous processing of the fetch-execute cycle.
- 19What would affect the speed of the CPU?Processor speed
Bus speed
Amount of Cache available
Number of core available - 20What is the motherboard?This is the printed circuit board which hold the critical parts of the computer system.
- 21What is binary?These are digits stored with either a 0 or 1
- 22What is ROM?Read only memory
- 23What is RAM?Random Access Memory
- 24What can the main internal memory in a compute be split into?ROM and RAM
- 25Can ROM be change by a program or user?No, as the name suggests it cannot be changed by a program or user
- 26What is ROM used to store?It is used to store the instructions for the computer to start up when it is turned on again
- 27What is the data in the ROM saved like?This data in the ROM is saved even if the compute is switched off
- 28What is this known as?Non-volatile data
- 29Which is faster ROM or RAM?RAM is much faster than ROM
- 30What is RAM used as?It is used as a temporary memory in which programs, applications and data are stored whilst they are being used
- 31What happens to all the data stored in its RAM data if a computer loses power?All data stored in its RAM is lost
- 32What is this known as?Volatile data
- 33What is the cycle?Secondary storage -->
RAM -->
Cache memory -->
CPU - 34What happens when you need to install some more RAM?Your computer runs slowly and it can't keep up
