Questão Responda
Ferrous Iron is soft and ductile, making it commercially un-useful. When you mix iron with carbon the characteristics are greatly improved. Increasing the carbon content will make the material harder, reduce toughness and ductility.
Ferrous Mild steel (properties) -Ductile -Malleable -Tough -High tensile strength -Poor resistance to corrosion
Ferrous Mild steel (uses) -Nuts -Bolts -Washers -Car bodies -Panels for cookers
Ferrous High carbon steel (properties) -Very hard -Brittle -Difficult to cut -Poor corrosion resistance
Ferrous High carbon steel (uses) -Hand tools -Chisels -Plane blades
Ferrous Cast iron (properties) -Smooth skin -Strong when compressed -Self lubricating -Can't be bent or forged
Ferrous Cast iron (uses) -Machine parts -Brake discs -Engines
Ferrous High speed steel (properties) -Very hard -Heat resistant -Remains hard when red
Ferrous High speed steel (uses) Tools eg. drill bits
Ferrous Stainless steel (properties) -Tough -Hard -Corrosion resistant -Wears well -Difficult to cut, bend and file
Ferrous Stainless steel (uses) -Cutlery -Sinks
Non-Ferrous Aluminium (properties) -Good strength to weight ratio -Ductile -Malleable -Resists corrosion -Conducts heat and electricity well
Non-Ferrous Aluminium (uses) Kitchenware
Non-Ferrous Copper (properties) -Tough -Ductile -Malleable -Conducts electricity well -Corrosion resistant -Solders well
Non-Ferrous Copper (uses) -Electrical contacts -Pipes -Wires
Non-Ferrous Tin (properties) -Weak -Soft -Malleable -Ductile -Excellent corrosion resistant -Conducts electricity well
Non-Ferrous Tin (uses) Coating of steel plates in tin cans
Non-Ferrous Lead (properties) -Soft -Malleable -Very heavy -Corrosion resistant -Low melting point -Casts well -Conducts electricity well
Non-Ferrous Lead (uses) -Adjoining brickwork -Roof coverings
Alloys Benefits of alloying metals -Changes the melting point -Changes the colour -Increases strength, hardness and ductility -Enhances resistance to corrosion and oxidation -Changes electrical and thermal properties
Alloys Bronze (copper+zinc) -Tough -Strong -Wears well -Good corrosion resistance Eg. Coins, statues, wheel bearings
Alloys Brass (copper+zinc) -Quite hard -Rigid -Solders easily -Good conductor of heat and electricity Eg. Cast valves, taps, boat fittings
