Interpreting What You Read
Making Inferences
When you make inferences, you often have to be much more creative. Making inferences requires reading between lines and then drawing conclusion from clues or evidence that implies something not said directly.
Separating Fact From Opinion
A fact is information that can be proved with evidence.
An opinion is what someone think or believes about something.
Detecting Bias
Bias refers to a strong emotional preferences to one viewpoint or another. Bias is typically presented as fact in order to convince others.
Drawing Conclusion
Making inferences, separating facts from opinion, and spotting bias helps you to draw conclusions from what you read. Conclusions are what you decide to base on the information you've given. Conclusion may be useful or not useful, and they may be based on the facts or opinion.
2 ways to detect a bias:
1) Are the statements logically related?
2) Does the writer use loaded words? (such us grumble, whin, bargain, free, fine, quantity, guaranteed or split, bitter instead of different.
Complain - this word is relatively neutral. When people complain, they're simply saying they're unhappy about something. (жаловаться; сетовать)
Grumble- this word sends a different message. When someone grumbled, you can see muttering(бурчание) smn breath and frowning(хмуриться) a lot. You're more likely to think of that person as expressing anger. (ворчать)
Whin - it's usually considered childish behavior. A whiner complains like a child. (ныть)
Sometimes authors intentionally (намеренно) insert theirs bias, and sometimes the bias is unintentional (непреднамеренно). And bias isn't necessarily good or bad. Bias supported by evidence makes more sense than bias based simply on opinions or feelings. Making an effort to detect bias in the material you read helps you to understand the writer's point of view
A preliminary conclusion is one that helps you get to a final conclusion
